Therapy in Aarhus

There will be circumstances throughout life that create challenges and crises that can be difficult to navigate alone. Sometimes the stressful feelings and thoughts can persist for a longer period of time and develop into more entrenched states that affect our everyday lives and quality of life.

At Bemerk, we offer psychological treatment for adults, adolescents and children with various mental health issues. We use modern, evidence-based treatment methods with a special focus on ACT therapy (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), which has proven effective in the treatment of many different mental health disorders.

What can we help you with?

Anxiety and anxiety disorders

Anxiety can manifest itself in many ways and to varying degrees. You may experience:

  • General worry and anxiety

  • Panic disorder with physical symptoms such as heart palpitations and dizziness

  • Social anxiety in social contexts

  • Specific phobias such as claustrophobia or agoraphobia

  • Obsessive thoughts and compulsive symptoms (OCD)

  • Performance anxiety and exam anxiety

Anxiety can feel overwhelming and significantly affect your everyday life. In therapy, we will work to understand your anxiety patterns and develop concrete strategies to manage anxiety in a new way.

Depression and dejection

Depression is experienced as an almost constant sadness and dejection where it can be difficult to see the positive in life. Even though you are rationally aware that you are lucky in many ways, you can no longer feel it. You will have a pessimistic view of the future and experience a loss of joy and interest in things that previously engaged you.

Maybe you feel:

  • Apathetic and paralyzed

  • Exhausted or irritable and restless

  • Plagued by thoughts of low self-esteem and a guilty conscience

  • Lack of pleasure and joy in everyday activities

Depression can be a temporary, mild condition, but it can also be a serious mental illness that requires long-term treatment. If you suspect that you are moving into a depressive state, it is recommended to contact a professional.

Stress and burnout

Stress occurs when the demands in our lives exceed our resources to cope with them. This can happen at work, in our personal lives, or in relationships. Persistent stress can develop into burnout and affect both your mental and physical health.

Signs of stress can be:

  • Constant restlessness and anxiety

  • Sleep problems and difficulty concentrating

  • Physical symptoms such as headaches and muscle aches

  • Feeling of not being able to hit

  • Isolation from social contexts

Life crises and major changes

Major life changes such as divorce, illness, job loss, or a death in the family can trigger existential crises. These periods can feel overwhelming and leave us with questions about the meaning and direction of life.

In therapy, we will work existentially with your circumstances here and now, and with your expectations for life in general. We will clarify what is important here and now, and set up concrete action points to gradually move you forward.

Low self-esteem

Low self-esteem can affect every aspect of your life – from relationships to work and personal development. You may struggle with:

  • Self-critical thoughts and inner critic

  • Comparison with others

  • Perfectionism and high demands on yourself

  • Difficulty saying no and setting boundaries

  • Fear of rejection and conflict

Sleep problems

Sleep problems can be both a cause and a consequence of other mental health challenges. You may have difficulty falling asleep, wake up several times during the night, or feel unrefreshed despite getting enough sleep.

Our treatment approach

ACT therapy as a basis

Eva Rustad from Bemerk is a certified ACT therapist and bases her work on this form of therapy. ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) is ranked among the 3rd generation cognitive behavioral therapies and has a solid and growing empirical basis that supports the treatment's effectiveness.

As humans, we will experience psychological pain and suffering. A life without pain would be very unusual. Yet we tend to fight against pain and discomfort and have the attitude that it cannot be tolerated. A fight against discomfort can manifest itself as a constant, grinding attention to the problem, as fear and worry, or an all-consuming escape to avoid what feels unpleasant.

In ACT therapy, you will be introduced to an experiential working method. You will do exercises that let you feel, sense and experience instead of having something explained to you only in words. You will also do concrete exercises to get used to being in the discomfort instead of running away from it.

Integration of other methods

Eva overlaps with methods from other therapeutic directions where she sees that it can benefit the client. This may include:

  • Cognitive techniques for working with thought patterns

  • Mindfulness and attention training

  • Exposure therapy for anxiety and phobias

  • Grief management in the event of loss and crisis

  • Trauma treatment for PTSD

Focus on values and action

Through well-founded ACT methods, you can be helped in the direction of what is important to you and what gives life meaning. This requires you to practice accepting some of the discomfort that life inevitably offers – the things we cannot change. But just as central are the concrete actions here and now, the things we can actually do to move us in the direction of the life we want to live.

Self-assessment: 10 questions about your mental health

To give you a sense of whether you could benefit from professional help, consider the following questions:

  1. Are you depressed and tend to think negative thoughts in most situations?

  2. Do you have changes in your digestion, such as a sluggish stomach or frequent diarrhea?

  3. Are you restless and have more difficulty than usual in sitting still?

  4. Do you have thoughts that it is your own fault that you feel bad?

  5. Do you have muscle pain or other diffuse pain in the body?

  6. Do you have difficulty falling asleep or wake up several times during the night and have difficulty falling back asleep?

  7. Do you have thoughts that everything would be easier, for yourself and for others, if you didn't exist?

  8. Do you have difficulty performing routine tasks at work or at home?

  9. Do you experience stomach upset, sweating and heart palpitations several times a day?

  10. Do you experience being anxious and worried much of the time, having difficulty calming yourself?

If you answer 'YES' to most of the 10 questions, your current condition has a significant impact on your everyday life. It is recommended that you discuss your condition with a professional. At Bemerk, you are welcome to call or write an email and have a non-binding conversation by phone. From here, we can work together to find out how you can best be helped.
